Fett og fettstoffer går under fellesnevneren Lipider, og er stoffer som karakteriseres ved at de ikke løser seg i vann, bare i organiske løsningsmidler som eter, kloroform, bensin o. Det meste av fettet i kroppen er i form av såkalte triglyserider. Alle fettmolekylen er bygd opp på samme måte, med ett glyserolmolekyl som har tre fettsyremolekyl knyttet til seg. De tre fettsyrene kan være ulikt bygget opp, slik at fettmolekylene kan være store og komplekse. En skiller gjerne mellom depotfett og det fettet som finst i musklene og i organene. Dermed dannes en emulsjon (oppslemming) av svært små dråper, som gir det fettspaltende enzymet lipase (fra bukspyttkjertelen) en stor overflate å virke på. Lipasen spalter triglyseridene i frie fettsyrer (monoglyserider og glyserol) som kan opptas av cellene i tarmslimhinnen. En del av fettet oksyderes (forbrennes) i cellene, og fett er en meget viktig energikilde. Fett som ikke forbrennes avleires i fettdepotene som triglyserider. Også de karbohydratene som kroppen ikke har bruk for omdannes til, og avleires som fett. De fungerer som energireserve, som varmeisolasjon og som polstring for organene. Fettet i organismen byttes ut uavbrudt, både i leveren og i fettdepotene foregår en stadig nedbrytning og oppbygging av fett. Derfor transporteres til stadighet betydelige fettmengder i blodet, mellom fettdepotene, leveren, tarmene og cellene forøvrig. Fett deles inn i tre hovedgrupper: – Mettet fett (fast i kjøleskapstemp.), finnes i fete kjøtt- og meierivarer.– Enumettet fett (halvfast i kjøleskapstemp.), finnes i olivenolje.– Flerumettet fett (flytende i kjøleskapstemp.) og som finnes i soyaolje og fiskefett. Mettet fett har bare enkeltbindinger i de tre tilknyttede fettsyrene. Et stort inntak av mettet fett kan føre til øket nivå av fettstoffet kolesterol i blodet. Dette kan på sikt føre til at blodårene blir tette og i verste fall føre til åreforkalkning, hjertekrampe, hjerteinfarkt eller hjerneslag. Mettet fett er animalsk, og finnes i mat fra dyreriket, og i produkter som smør, flesk, talg, ost og kjøtt. Kokos- og palmeolje, som brukes i harde margarintyper, er også mettet fett, til tross for at det er vegetabilsk. Umettet fett er den sunneste typen fett for oss menneske, og kan vere med på å minke risikoen for blant annet åreforkalking. Det spesielle med dette fettet er at kroppen vår ikke kan lage det selv og at vi derfor må få det fra maten vi spiser. På fagspråket kalles dette for essensielt fett og de viktigste typene er omega- 3 og omega- 6. Dette kan også kalles smart fett fordi dette er fett som er godt for hjernecellene, nervecellene, cellemembranene, hormonbalansen og for dannelsen av signalmolekyler i kroppen. Dette fettet kan til og med gjøre det lettere å gå ned i vekt og holde vekten der du vil fordi det bidrar til reguleringen av kroppens energiforbrenning og omsetning av fett. Bruk helst umettet fett som produseres av planter og plankton. Det finnes i fiskefett, olivenolje, solsikke- , soya- , mais- og rapsolje. Våre celler kan ikke lage flerumettet fett. Det samme gjelder vitaminer og mineraler. Derfor må kroppen ha tilført disse stoffene. Enumettet fett har en dobbeltbinding i fettsyremolekylene. Denne typen fett finner vi stort sett i ulike matoljer, som mais, raps og olivenolje. Flerumettet fett har to eller flere dobbeltbindinger i fettsyremolekylene. Denne typen fett finner vi i fet fisk som for eksempel i laks, sild, makrell, og også i soyaolje. Mesteparten av kolesterolet vi har i blodet produseres av kroppen selv. When using stimulants to treat Inattentive ADHD, practitioners must follow a “start low and go slow” approach because researchers have found that treating ADHD- PI is best achieved with low doses of stimulants that are titrated or adjusted to higher doses slowly. Russell Barkley, arguably the most respected expert in the ADHD scientific community, has reported that when treating Inattentive ADHD, physicians should expect that only one in five Inattentive ADHD patients will show a sufficiently therapeutic response to stimulant therapy to justify maintaining them on medication. Two thirds will show a mild improvement but those improvements are not enough to call them clinical responders. These same researchers have observed that when stimulants are used to treat people with Inattentive ADHD or SCT, that these patients become sluggish and their symptoms appear to worsen. Decreasing the activity level of people who have low activity levels to begin with, as is the case in Sluggish Cognitive Tempo, or normal levels of activity, as is the case of ADHD- PI is, they report, inappropriate. Some psychiatrists have found that a few ADHD- PI and SCT patients do better when treated with Atomoxetine (Strattera) or Guanfacine (Tenex). These medications act on different neural pathways that are thought to be amiss in ADHD- PI and SCT. These medicines act less on motor activity and some psychiatrists and researchers believe that they are, therefore, better candidates for treating Inattentive ADHD symptoms such as slow cognitive processing and working memory deficiencies. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) has been found to be more useful for treating the Inattentive subtype of ADHD than it is for treating the combined type or Hyperactive/Impulsive type of this disorder. The CBT treatment strategies that work best for treating Inattentive ADHD are behavioral therapies that specifically target the symptoms that are most problematic in ADHD- PI and SCT. Cognitive behavioral programs that address motivational deficiencies, memory problems, organizational skills deficiencies and time management problems have been shown to offer great promise for the treatment of ADHD- PI and SCT. Cognitive Behavioral Programs designed for the Hyperactive/Impulsive and Combined types of ADHD will not be nearly as useful for the treatment of Inattentive ADHD. These programs tend to address different areas of difficulty such as impulsive behavior that do not need remediation or treatment in patients with ADHD- PI and SCT. These programs often pay less attention to the unique difficulties seen in ADHD- PI, such as the everyday memory failures and motivational deficits that can cause major disruptions in the lives of people with ADHD- PI and SCT and for these reasons, they will be less effective. The treatment of Inattentive ADHD and SCT poses several challenges for health care providers not only because the symptoms of this disorder are different but also because their response to medication and behavioral therapies are different. Health care providers should be cautious when treating Inattentive ADHD or SCT with stimulant medication and should take a ‘start slow and go slow’ approach to treatment. All behavioral treatments for ADHD- PI and SCT should be tailored to treat the unique symptoms seen in these disorders. It is imperative that health care providers take these considerations into account because all Inattentive ADHD treatment programs will be more successful if an approach such as this one is implemented. Avoid or dislike tasks that require sustained mental effort, such as schoolwork or homework, or for teens and older adults, preparing reports, completing forms or reviewing lengthy papers. Lose things necessary for tasks or activities, such as school supplies, pencils, books, tools, wallets, keys, paperwork, eyeglasses, and cell phones. Be easily distracted by unrelated thoughts or stimuli. Be forgetful in daily activities, such as chores, errands, returning calls, and keeping appointments. Hyperactivity- Impulsivity. People with symptoms of hyperactivity- impulsivity may often: Fidget and squirm in their seats. Leave their seats in situations when staying seated is expected, such as in the classroom or in the office. Run or dash around or climb in situations where it is inappropriate or, in teens and adults, often feel restless. Be unable to play or engage in hobbies quietly. Be constantly in motion or “on the go,” or act as if “driven by a motor”Talk nonstop. Blurt out an answer before a question has been completed, finish other people’s sentences, or speak without waiting for a turn in conversation. Have trouble waiting his or her turn. Interrupt or intrude on others, for example in conversations, games, or activities. Diagnosis of ADHD requires a comprehensive evaluation by a licensed clinician, such as a pediatrician, psychologist, or psychiatrist with expertise in ADHD. For a person to receive a diagnosis of ADHD, the symptoms of inattention and/or hyperactivity- impulsivity must be chronic or long- lasting, impair the person’s functioning, and cause the person to fall behind normal development for his or her age. The doctor will also ensure that any ADHD symptoms are not due to another medical or psychiatric condition. Most children with ADHD receive a diagnosis during the elementary school years. For an adolescent or adult to receive a diagnosis of ADHD, the symptoms need to have been present prior to age 1. ADHD symptoms can appear as early as between the ages of 3 and 6 and can continue through adolescence and adulthood. Symptoms of ADHD can be mistaken for emotional or disciplinary problems or missed entirely in quiet, well- behaved children, leading to a delay in diagnosis. Adults with undiagnosed ADHD may have a history of poor academic performance, problems at work, or difficult or failed relationships. ADHD symptoms can change over time as a person ages. In young children with ADHD, hyperactivity- impulsivity is the most predominant symptom. As a child reaches elementary school, the symptom of inattention may become more prominent and cause the child to struggle academically. In adolescence, hyperactivity seems to lessen and may show more often as feelings of restlessness or fidgeting, but inattention and impulsivity may remain. Many adolescents with ADHD also struggle with relationships and antisocial behaviors. Inattention, restlessness, and impulsivity tend to persist into adulthood. Treatment and Therapies. While there is no cure for ADHD, currently available treatments can help reduce symptoms and improve functioning. Treatments include medication, psychotherapy, education or training, or a combination of treatments. Medication. For many people, ADHD medications reduce hyperactivity and impulsivity and improve their ability to focus, work, and learn. Medication also may improve physical coordination. Sometimes several different medications or dosages must be tried before finding the right one that works for a particular person. Anyone taking medications must be monitored closely and carefully by their prescribing doctor. Stimulants. The most common type of medication used for treating ADHD is called a “stimulant.” Although it may seem unusual to treat ADHD with a medication that is considered a stimulant, it works because it increases the brain chemicals dopamine and norepinephrine, which play essential roles in thinking and attention. Under medical supervision, stimulant medications are considered safe. However, there are risks and side effects, especially when misused or taken in excess of the prescribed dose. For example, stimulants can raise blood pressure and heart rate and increase anxiety. Therefore, a person with other health problems, including high blood pressure, seizures, heart disease, glaucoma, liver or kidney disease, or an anxiety disorder should tell their doctor before taking a stimulant. Talk with a doctor if you see any of these side effects while taking stimulants: decreased appetitesleep problemstics (sudden, repetitive movements or sounds); personality changesincreased anxiety and irritabilitystomachachesheadaches. Non- stimulants. A few other ADHD medications are non- stimulants. These medications take longer to start working than stimulants, but can also improve focus, attention, and impulsivity in a person with ADHD. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) specifically for the treatment of ADHD, some antidepressants are sometimes used alone or in combination with a stimulant to treat ADHD. Behavioral therapy is a type of psychotherapy that aims to help a person change his or her behavior. It might involve practical assistance, such as help organizing tasks or completing schoolwork, or working through emotionally difficult events. Behavioral therapy also teaches a person how to: monitor his or her own behaviorgive oneself praise or rewards for acting in a desired way, such as controlling anger or thinking before acting. Parents, teachers, and family members also can give positive or negative feedback for certain behaviors and help establish clear rules, chore lists, and other structured routines to help a person control his or her behavior. Therapists may also teach children social skills, such as how to wait their turn, share toys, ask for help, or respond to teasing. Learning to read facial expressions and the tone of voice in others, and how to respond appropriately can also be part of social skills training. Cognitive behavioral therapy can also teach a person mindfulness techniques, or meditation. A person learns how to be aware and accepting of one’s own thoughts and feelings to improve focus and concentration. The therapist also encourages the person with ADHD to adjust to the life changes that come with treatment, such as thinking before acting, or resisting the urge to take unnecessary risks. Family and marital therapy can help family members and spouses find better ways to handle disruptive behaviors, to encourage behavior changes, and improve interactions with the patient. Children and adults with ADHD need guidance and understanding from their parents, families, and teachers to reach their full potential and to succeed. Mental health professionals can educate parents about ADHD and how it affects a family. They also will help the child and his or her parents develop new skills, attitudes, and ways of relating to each other. Parenting skills training (behavioral parent management training) teaches parents the skills they need to encourage and reward positive behaviors in their children. It helps parents learn how to use a system of rewards and consequences to change a child’s behavior. Parents are taught to give immediate and positive feedback for behaviors they want to encourage, and ignore or redirect behaviors that they want to discourage. These symptoms, however, do not prevent them from carrying out normal activities and are not as severe as the symptoms for Alzheimer's disease. Symptoms often include misplacing items, forgetting events or appointments, and having trouble finding words.[2][3]According to recent research, MCI is seen as the transitional state between cognitive changes of normal aging and Alzheimer's disease. Several studies have indicated that individuals with MCI are at an increased risk for developing AD, ranging from 1% to 2. MCI patients progressed to AD in 2 years and 2. MCI subjects was 5. Some patients with MCI, however, never progress to AD.[6]Studies have also indicated patterns that are found in both MCI and AD. Much like patients with Alzheimer's disease, those suffering from mild cognitive impairment have difficulty accurately defining words and using them appropriately in sentences when asked. While MCI patients had a lower performance in this task than the control group, AD patients performed worse overall. The abilities of MCI patients stood out, however, due to the ability to provide examples to make up for their difficulties. AD patients failed to use any compensatory strategies and therefore exhibited the difference in use of episodic memory and executive functioning.[7]Normal aging[edit]Normal aging is associated with a decline in various memory abilities in many cognitive tasks; the phenomenon is known as age- related memory impairment (AMI) or age- associated memory impairment (AAMI). The ability to encode new memories of events or facts and working memory shows decline in both cross- sectional and longitudinal studies.[8] Studies comparing the effects of aging on episodic memory, semantic memory, short- term memory and priming find that episodic memory is especially impaired in normal aging; some types of short- term memory are also impaired.[9] The deficits may be related to impairments seen in the ability to refresh recently processed information.[1. Source information is one type of episodic memory that suffers with old age; this kind of knowledge includes where and when the person learned the information. ![]() Knowing the source and context of information can be extremely important in daily decision- making, so this is one way in which memory decline can affect the lives of the elderly. Therefore, reliance on political stereotypes is one way to use their knowledge about the sources when making judgments, and the use of metacognitive knowledge gains importance.[1. This deficit may be related to declines in the ability to bind information together in memory during encoding and retrieve those associations at a later time.[1. Episodic memory is supported by networks spanning frontal, temporal, and parietal lobes. The interconnections in the lobes are presumed to enable distinct aspects of memory, whereas the effects of gray matter lesions have been extensively studied, less is known about the interconnecting fiber tracts. In aging, degradation of white matter structure has emerged as an important general factor, further focusing attention on the critical white matter connections. Exercise affects many people young and old. For the young if exercise is introduced it can form a constructive habit that can be instilled throughout adult hood. For the elderly, especially ones that have Alzheimer’s or other diseases that affect the memory. When the brain is introduced to exercise the hippocampus part of the brain can regain in size and improve memory. In particular, associative learning, which is another type of episodic memory, is vulnerable to the effects of aging, and this has been demonstrated across various study paradigms.[1. This has been explained by the Associative Deficit Hypothesis (ADH), which states that aging is associated with a deficiency in creating and retrieving links between single units of information. This can include knowledge about context, events or items. The ability to bind pieces of information together with their episodic context in a coherent whole has been reduced in the elderly population.[1. Furthermore, the older adults’ performances in free recall involved temporal contiguity to a lesser extent than for younger people, indicating that associations regarding contiguity become weaker with age.[1. Several reasons have been speculated as to why older adults use less effective encoding and retrieval strategies as they age. The first is the “disuse” view, which states that memory strategies are used less by older adults as they move further away from the educational system. Second is the “diminished attentional capacity” hypothesis, which means that older people engage less in self- initiated encoding due to reduced attentional capacity. The third reason is the “memory self- efficacy,” which indicates that older people do not have confidence in their own memory performances, leading to poor consequences.[1. It is known that patients with Alzheimer’s disease and patients with semantic dementia both exhibit difficulty in tasks that involve picture naming and category fluency. This is tied to damage to their semantic network, which stores knowledge of meanings and understandings. One phenomenon, known as "Senior Moments", is a memory deficit that appears to have a biological cause. When an older adult is interrupted while completing a task, it is likely that the original task at hand can be forgotten. Studies have shown that the brain of an older adult does not have the ability to re- engage after an interruption and continues to focus on the particular interruption unlike that of a younger brain.[1. This inability to multi- task is normal with aging and is expected to become more apparent with the increase of older generations remaining in the work field. A biological explanation for memory deficits in aging includes a postmortem examination of five brains of elderly people with better memory than average. These people are called the "super aged,” and it was found that these individuals had fewer fiber- like tangles of tau protein than in typical elderly brains. However, a similar amount of amyloid plaque was found.[1. More recent research has extended established findings of age related decline in executive functioning,[1. Sequential performance refers to the execution of a series steps needed to complete a routine, such as the steps required to make a cup of coffee or drive a car. An important part of healthy aging involves older adults’ use of memory and inhibitory processes to carry out daily activities in a fixed order without forgetting the sequence of steps that were just completed while remembering the next step in the sequence. A recent study[2. Findings from this study revealed that when older and young adults had to remember a sequence of 8 animal images arranged in a fixed order, both age groups spontaneously used the organizational strategy of chunking to facilitate retrieval of information. However, older adults were slower at accessing each chunk compared to younger adults, and were better able to benefit from the use of memory aids, such as verbal rehearsal to remember the order of the fixed sequence. Results from this study suggest that there are age differences in memory and inhibitory processes that affect people’s sequence of actions and the use of memory aids could facilitate the retrieval of information in older age. Memory lapses can be both aggravating and frustrating but they are due to the overwhelming amount of information that is being taken in by the brain. Issues in memory can also be linked to several common physical and psychological causes, such as: anxiety, dehydration, depression, infections, medication side effects, poor nutrition, vitamin B1. Taking care of your body and mind with appropriate medication, doctoral check- ups, and daily mental and physical exercise can prevent some of these memory issues.[2. Some memory issues are due to stress, anxiety, or depression. A traumatic life event, such as the death of a spouse, can lead to changes in lifestyle and can leave an elderly person feeling unsure of themselves, sad, and lonely. Dealing with such drastic life changes can therefore leave some people confused or forgetful. While in some cases these feelings may fade, it is important to take these emotional problems seriously. By emotionally supporting a struggling relative and seeking help from a doctor or counselor, the forgetfulness can be improved.[3]Theories[edit]Tests and data show that as people age, the contiguity effect weakens.[clarification needed] This is supported by the associative deficit theory of memory, which asserts old people's poor memory performance is attributed to their difficulty in creating and retaining cohesive episodes. The supporting research in this test, after controlling for sex, education, and other health- related issues, show that greater age was associated with lower hit and greater false alarm rates, and also a more liberal bias response on recognition tests.[2. Older people have a higher tendency to make outside intrusions during a memory test. This can be attributed to the inhibition effect. Inhibition caused participants to take longer time in recalling or recognizing an item, and also subjected the participants to make more frequent errors. For instance, in a study using metaphors as the test subject, older participants rejected correct metaphors more often than literally false statements.[2. Coping With Mild Cognitive Impairment. About 1. 0 to 1. 5 percent of adults age 6. Alarmingly, mild cognitive impairment, or M. C. I., can signal serious problems ahead: About half of people with this condition go on to a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease or another dementia within five years. Yet when researchers from the University of Toronto searched worldwide for programs that educate people about M. C. I. and how to adapt to it, they found only five — three in Canada, one in Germany and one in Rochester, Minn., home to the Mayo Clinic, which first defined M. C. I. in 1. 99. 9. Similarly, a North American search for support groups for people with M. C. I. turned up just a handful. The University of Toronto researchers set out to rectify this lack of attention by writing “Living With Mild Cognitive Impairment,” published recently by Oxford University Press. One of its authors, Nicole Anderson, an associate professor of psychiatry at the University of Toronto, spoke with me at length, and our conversation has been edited for clarity and length. Q. There’s some confusion about mild cognitive impairment. Is it the earliest stage of dementia or something else? A. Most often, it is the earliest, preclinical stage of dementia. That means symptoms are not severe enough to meet the criteria for dementia. But pathology is developing in the brain that will likely lead to dementia. Sometimes, however, people have other health problems that lead to an M. C. I. diagnosis, and once these are treated their cognition improves. Q. What cognitive functions are affected by M. C. I.? A. The most typical one is memory. Also common are subtle language difficulties and executive functioning deficits. This refers to an ability to multitask, switch back and forth between two tasks, or inhibit irrelevant information and stay focused on what’s important. Q. What isn’t affected? A. People’s general knowledge. Their vocabulary. Their intellectual ability. And by definition, people with M. C. I. do not have deficits in their ability to engage in activities of daily living, such as bathing, eating or cooking. Q. What about work? A. People will still be able to work. But they might find they need to put some more supports in place. They may become more reliant on Day- Timers or need more reminders from a secretary keeping track of their schedule. And they might find it takes them longer to do complicated activities. Q. What changes in the brain are observed with M. C. I.? A. A vast majority of research has been done on people with “amnestic” M. C. I. – the kind involving memory loss. There we see shrinkage of key brain areas important for memory: the hippocampus and other areas around it in the medial temporal lobes. We can now also scan for amyloid protein in the brain, and often we will see elevated levels. Q. Yet high concentrations of amyloid don’t always signify dementia. A. That brings up the whole notion of cognitive reserve. This refers to the idea that people can engage in certain activities in their lives — getting higher levels of education, exercise, eating a healthy diet, being bilingual — that help protect them against the clinical impact of various brain diseases, especially dementia. Q. How does that work? A. We don’t know for sure, but people with larger reserves often have greater connectivity between different brain regions and use different areas of the brain to do different tasks. Q. Why is this important? A. We don’t have any medications at this point to prevent or treat M. C. I. or dementia. Yet we can engage in activities that will help reduce the impact of the disease and maintain our level of functioning. Q. What contributes to cognitive reserve? A. The most studied and validated factors are education, exercise and Mediterranean- style diets. There is also some evidence that the more complex your occupation is, the less likely you are to develop dementia. And people who have larger social networks are less likely to develop dementia, especially if the social connections they have are meaningful or rewarding. Q. What diminishes reserve? A. Having a prior head injury. Having high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol. Q. What are M. C. I. symptoms to watch out for? A. A. Repeatedly asking questions or making the same comments. Getting lost in a place that you’re familiar with. Forgetting an important event — say, a big meeting coming up — when that’s not something you would have done before. Q. Do people who come in for testing often have negative results? A. That is common. We see a lot of the worried well. Usually, what we detect with them is normal aging. Q. What is normal, when it comes to the aging brain? A. As we get older, our memory starts to decline, starting in our 2. Primarily affected is the ability to get new information stored in long- term memory. How fast we think and do simple mental activities slows down. And word problems become more prevalent as we become older. Q. Are there other reasons older adults might have cognitive problems? A. Absolutely. Thyroid problems, a vitamin B1. It’s notable that research also shows about 2. M. C. I. turn out to be normal. That tells us we don’t have a perfectly accurate way of testing for this yet. Q. You’ve said there are no medical treatments for M. C. I. A. True, but there are ways of elevating the levels at which a person functions so that the impact of M. C. I. will be smaller. I’ve mentioned several already. I’d add to those developing a good set of memory strategy habits. Q. Can you give some examples? A. There are a number of them. One, for remembering things in the future, involves regularly using a Day- Timer or a personal digital assistant. A lot of older adults just have the fridge calendar at home. It’s a problem because it’s at home — it’s not with them when their friend says, “Let’s have lunch next week,” or the doctor says, “Let’s schedule a new appointment.”We really encourage people to carry a memory book with them at all times, including a section for making notes and lists, a calendar, a phone book, a to- do list and essentials like a record of their medications. It absolutely helps. There’s research going on here that when you train people with profound amnesia to use devices like an i. Phone they can live independently. Another memory strategy is spaced retrieval. That involves repeating a word or phrase, then waiting a few seconds, then waiting a few more, and then waiting a few more before each repetition. That way, you’re putting what you want to remember into long- term memory and pulling it out again. A big problem with memory is that we don’t pay attention. So, what most of these strategies are doing is forcing us to pay attention. Another way to do that is to say out loud, “I’m going to go into the other room and get my book,” when that’s what you plan to do. Then, imagine yourself walking into the room and picking up the book. That forces you to pay attention to your intention and solidifies it in memory. Q. You and your co- authors are involved in a program for people with M. C. I. and their families in Toronto. What have you learned? A. It’s hugely beneficial for people. We have eight sessions, each two hours long. In the first hour, everyone is all together and there’s an educational session. The second hour, the family members go to another room where they meet with health care professionals who talk to them about diet or community resources or estate planning. Meanwhile, the people with M. C. I. stay in the room and learn practical memory strategies. They practice them over and over again. Then they get homework during the week to implement those strategies. What we hear from people is that this helps them regain their confidence because now they’re armed with ways of combating the effects of cognitive symptoms. Q. Why aren’t there more programs of this kind? A. I think the world is just catching up with M. C. I. Knowledge about M. C. I. and interventions for M. C. I. has unfortunately lagged behind. Cognitive impairment that comes with age may be thought of as belonging on a continuum, with one end being no cognitive impairment and the other end being dementia, of which Alzheimer's is the most common type. Most older adults are actually at the "no impairment" end of the continuum. A further 3. 0- 4. Only about 1% of these people will develop Alzheimer's. But around 1. 0% of adults over 6. Alzheimer's. This doesn't mean someone with MCI will inevitably get Alzheimer's in their lifetime, but their likelihood of doing so is substantially increased. Whether you are one of those 1. A study. 2 of nearly 4. Minnesota county, run by the Mayo Clinic, indicates 9% of those aged 7. MCI. The prevalence decreased with years of education: it was 2. Whether or not this will develop into Alzheimer’s can be predicted with a reasonably high level of accuracy (7. Whether actions known to build brain tissue (physical exercise, mental stimulation) can counteract that in this population is not yet known — but it certainly can’t hurt! Mild cognitive impairment doesn’t necessarily mean memory problems. There are two types of MCI: those with the amnesic subtype (MCI- A) have memory impairments only, while those with the multiple cognitive domain subtype (MCI- MCD) have other types of mild impairments, such as in judgment or language, and mild or no memory loss. Both sub- types progress to Alzheimer's disease at the same rate, but they do have different pathologies in the brain. Mild cognitive impairment is not necessarily obvious to outside observers. A person with it can function perfectly well, and although they may feel their impairment is obvious to all around them, it's not likely to be obvious to anyone not living with them. A person suffering from mild cognitive impairment may find that they have problems with: finding the right wordsmaking decisionsremembering recent eventsplacing things in space (for example, getting the proportions right when drawing a simple object such as a box). Essentially, age- related cognitive impairment might be thought of as slight, non- important, cognitive impairment, while mild cognitive impairment is a condition where significant cognitive impairment exists which nevertheless doesn't affect daily functioning.
